I read in this book (it’s fiction) about this experiment involving mice and food and pleasure.
I couldn’t get it off my mind. I really couldn’t.
See, there were these mice and then there were these food that mice like. I’m guessing something like cheese or that sort. Anyway, the only thing that stood in in the way of the mice getting the food was this area of high voltage. So to get the food they had to pass that area. But see, the further they move towards the food, the higher the voltage and the greater the pain.
They (I’m guessing scientists) then did the same experiment with mice and things that give them pleasure (I’m not sure what these ‘things’ are but it’s definitely not food). So the mice still had to go through an area of high voltage in order to attain these pleasurable objects. This is the interesting bits. They found out that the mice moved a greater distance towards these pleasurable things than towards food. In other words, they were willing to suffer more for pleasure than for food.
I think humans are the same in most cases. And really, it makes me sort of sad.
